About Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

According to the Fact Sheet on NARHA's website "Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy is defined as a form of experiential psychotherapy that includes equine(s)"(www.narha.org/efmha).This form of therapy allows the client to develop a relationship with another being who is much larger and powerful than them. This relationship then allows the client opportunities to enhance self-awareness and re-pattern maladaptive behaviors, feelings and attitudes. It has been my experience so far that this type of therapy is for anyone who is hurting, in crisis and seeking help.
At this time I do all of the therapy on the ground without emphasis on riding. In the future I hope to have the option to utilize the riding experience in my plans of care. The main focus is on the grooming and bonding process. The horse's energy filed is huge and most will admit that after spending 20 -30 minutes grooming the horse , they are more calm and centered. Student nurses were tested before and after a 3 hour program and it was found their stress level was lowered significantly.
